I am a Native of Drumsna, Co Leitrim, I was educated at Annaduff National School, Marymount College Carrick on Shannon and the Institute of Technology Sligo.

In 1991 I was elected Vice-President of the Students Union of the Institute of Technology Sligo. I Graduated from the Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Computing.
I also graduated from the Irish Institute of Purchasing & Materials Management and recently graduated once again from the Institute of Technology Sligo this time with a BA Degree in Fine Art.

In June 1999 I ran for the first time in the local elections and was elected to Leitrim County Council. The seat that I was elected to had previously been held by my father, Michael for over twenty-five years and prior to that by my late Grandfather, Patrick for twenty-seven years. In July 2001 I was elected Chairperson of Leitrim County Council and served in this position for one year.
In the 2004 Local Election I was returned to office for another five years and was once again elected to hold the position of Cathaoirleach of the Council for the term of office 2006-2007. I was reelected to the Council for a third time this year.
